A ROAMING GNOME from Session Americana; Island Barn Café / The Artifact

“The group, whose members have played with a variety of acts including Patty Griffin, Josh Ritter and the J. Geils Band, expertly blends vintage American roots music styles — from country to jazz to rock — in a rowdy but deft fashion.” – Rolling Stone

“Session Americana comes up with some gems, full of folk’s honesty and rock’s urgency.”
The Boston Globe

“Session Americana has developed into a traveling medicine show which eschews snake oil in favour of an ongoing grail quest for the perfect collaborative experience.” – Hot Press Ireland

Session Americana spent time over the past couple of years working on new material and recordings. With the help of Alec Spiegelman (Cuddle Magic, Ana Egge), who edited and mixed songs recorded in various locations with various people, the recordings are now complete in the form of Island Barn Café the latest Session Americana record. But rather than a CD, vinyl, cassette or even digital release, there is only one copy of this record. Its called The Artifact and the band has started a sort of “roaming gnome” with the album traveling from place to place being experienced and documented as it goes organically through the world. Imagine a Session Americana fan/friend gets a box in the mail with a little music player, some headphones and cables, a booklet. Will it be fun to put the headphones on and listen, maybe post a little photo on their socials or contact the band, and figure out who they would like to hand or mail it to next?

Turns out the answer is yes! The album went out like a garden gnome in November and folks seem to love it!
“The Artifact taps into a musical adventure long forgotten, where sharing records from your collection was the only way to get your ears on whole albums and deep cuts that told the whole story and transported you to places you might never get a chance to visit.” — Brett Wohlgemuth
“During those shows, life long friends were made for me and many of us. Y’all sharing your space/ time/ talents/ dreams/ emotions/ selves with us has exponentially made my life a better experience. And I am forever grateful. Session Americana brings the people I want to know and share space with together. And y’all have been doing it consistently for decades now. Sesh Sesh’s music has been a big part of the soundtrack of my life.” — Erin Good-Stone
I couldn’t choose a favorite song. I just couldn’t. I loved them all for their own reasons. The opening track, “When The Dust Has Settled,” brought tears to my eyes. Dinty’s song “The Upside” resonates more than ever in this politically polarizing climate (“nobody wins if we’re all unhinged”)! That guitar riff in “I’m a Dog” is so darn good & the lyrics remind me of Session’s silly side I love so much. I just couldn’t. I loved them all for their own reasons. My hair may be permanently stuck in those metal headphones because I didn’t take them off for 48 hours. It was short but sweet. I didn’t want to give it up, but music is meant to be shared & that’s the name of the game. I hope/bet everyone who hears it after me loves it as much as I did. — Marinda Snow Huff
