Following a poignant performance at the 2021 Americana Music Awards last week, Amythyst Kiah presents a live performance video of her original song “Fancy Drones (Fracture Me),” one of the standout tracks from her acclaimed Rounder Records debut Wary + Strange.
“This song started as a poem,” says Amythyst. “First World modern society allows us so much access to technology, material possessions, medication for our ailments, supplements to make up for a poor diet. All of this convenience because we are convinced that being workaholics makes us who we are. We become cogs in a large machine. It’s a tale as old as time and we are all susceptible to it. This is just another blues song that laments that tale in a fresh way.”
This video may not be the first time you’ve seen Amythyst Kiah live this year. The 2021 breakout artist also performed recently at the Americana Music Honors and Awards (where she was nominated for Emerging Artist of the Year), made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry, played Newport Folk Festival, and supported Brandi Carlile at Forest Hills Stadium in NYC. On October 19, she’ll open for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
Wary + Strange was released in June via Rounder Records, earning Amythyst glowing features and reviews with The New York Times, NPR Morning Edition, Pitchfork, and Rolling Stone, plus performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CBS This Morning: Saturday.
Amythyst is currently on the road and has a busy festival schedule for the rest of 2021. Her two shows in North Bethesda’s Strathmore have sold out and Amythyst will perform at Ohana Encore before opening for Jason Isbell at the Ryman this October.
