“… A promising new artist who artfully occupies the gulf between old-school tradition and contemporary appropriation.” —Kim Ruehl, NPR Heavy Rotation

“…demonstrates the finesse and maturity of someone like Jason Isbell, 8 out of 10” —Uncut Magazine

“Adding raw, punk brio to a folk-blues template…” —Mojo Magazine

“…He has the songwriting chops and singing prowess of an aged blues legend.” —The Bluegrass Situation

At the age of 15 Jonah Tolchin met and jammed with blues legend Ronnie Earl in a music shop in Keene, New Hampshire, and he had the first big thrill of his musical life when Earl invited him to sit in at Tupelo Music Hall (Londonderry, NH) a few months later. After graduating from high school Jonah hit the road and started a solo performance and recording career. The first year out of high school he had released one EP (Eldawise) and a full-length record (Criminal Man)  and was performing at the Newport Folk Festival (summer 2012).

The following winter Tolchin recorded Clover Lane  (Yep Roc 2014) at Farmland Studio in Nashville (Anderson East) with producer Marvin Etzioni; special guests included Steve Berlin (Los Lobos), Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson), Chris Scruggs, John McCauley (Deer Tick), Eamon McLoughlin, among others. With the release of Clover Lane, NPR called Tolchin “a promising new artist who artfully occupies the gulf between old-school tradition and contemporary appropriation,” while Uncut said he “demonstrates the finesse and maturity of someone like Jason Isbell,” and Mojo praised him for “adding raw, punk brio to a folk-blues template.”

Yep Roc released Tolchin’s  next album Thousand Mile Night in 2016.  Recorded at the legendary FAME Studios (Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin), Thousand Mile Night charts the young songwriter’s remarkable growth, both personally and artistically, as he digs deep into the roots of American music with a distinctly modern perspective, tackling everything from love and marriage to life on the road to loneliness and depression with a deft lyrical touch.  According to reviewer Ed Whitelock, “On Thousand Mile Night Tolchin builds on the great promise of his critically acclaimed debut Clover Lane. Tolchin is a restless composer and musician who kicks against the limitations of musical labels. File him under Americana, but the moniker is all the more nuanced for the breadth and variety he brings to it.”  Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter calls Thousand Mile Night “a logical step forward for Tolchin whose performance feels grounded and lived in and reflects a talent who has absorbed rustic, humid, red clay sounds, employing that groove for his own often hypnotizing originals.”  Since the release of Clover Lane in 2014 Tolchin has had success in the streaming world, racking up over thirteen million plays on Spotify.

In 2017 Tolchin and drummer/singer/songwriter Kevin Clifford formed the power-duo Dharmasoul. Drums, guitar, and vocals are the backbone and energy behind their new album LIGHTNING KID, their debut record released in June 2018.  Jedd Beaudoin writes in Pop Matters, “The duo mixes a variety of American idioms, starting with New Orleans-style blues, funk and soul and stretching into a variety of dusty, dirty, gritty subgenres that come together under one giant mosaic tent. These influences are woven together seamlessly, handled with an authenticity and ease that sometimes recalls the eclecticism of the almighty Little Feat.”

Tolchin has shared stages throughout the United States and Europe with artists including Greg Allman, Tony Joe White, Dave & Phil Alvin, Chris Smither, Justin Townes Earle, Rickie Lee Jones, Tom Paxton, Burton Cummings, Chuck Prophet, and Mandolin Orange, among others. He has produced albums for Julie Rhodes and Bill Scorzari, with more production projects in the works.

Tolchin has just recently co-produced his latest album with grammy award winning engineer/producer Sheldon Gomberg. The album features a heavy cast of musicians including Jay Bellerose, Sebastian Steinberg, Fred Tackett, Greg Leisz, Sara Watkins, Ben Peeler, Jackson Browne, Rickie Lee Jones, and more (mastered by Joe Gastwirt). Stay tuned. . . . .
